Searched Hi&Lo for an Art Direction
Had a long weekend to put my nose to the grindstone and chisel these flat sprites to bring them to life!
I've got some idea about the direction I want head with the progression through the game; a tiny narrative is forming, and the new art assets have given me some consistency to aim for! Mind you, they are still placeholders but arguably way better to stare at while carving out levels to consider two unique paths that help/affect each other.
Speaking of level design: I have gone from freeform sprite assets to build levels, to using the Unity's Tilemaps!
Using rule tiles lets me construct levels quickly while following some adjacency rules to figure out which tile sprite to draw. Pretty liberating! Since I've built a template tile atlas, I'd be able to draw additional level tiles to represent different zones and it means I'll able to go back and touch up assets that are already used in my levels without worrying that the tiles being out of place!
On top of creating a new look for everything, and changing how I build my levels with Tilemaps, I also reworked the view to use a perspective camera. This allows the sprites that I place in the distance to have a parallax effect as the camera moves horizontally and vertically during gameplay.
I hope to keep up this momentum! Just a few more systems I need to get in, then the rest of this project's development can focus on building out an interesting world and a compelling progression!
